The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find an outcry for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
